Ok, get ready for picture overload again… Today I’m recapping Friday of our trip last week!
We started our day bright and early as we had an Alcatraz tour booked. Our uber driver picked us up at our hotel and as soon as we got in, we all oohed and aahed at the ceiling in his car. It had tons of little lights that slowly changed colors! Haha!
The ferry ride to Alcatraz is only about 10 minutes and it offers some amazing views of the city.
Once we arrived on the island, the ferry passengers congregate around the park hosts who are making announcements, giving directions, and pointing to the nearest restrooms.
I’m not sure which wife was able to get these guys to take a picture together but kudos to you! They’re not fans of picture taking… Haha!
We knew we wanted to take a guided tour and we all gathered around a lady who we “thought” would would be giving the tour. She started her spiel and we started our walk with her.
The tour guide kept pointing out all the various plants and flowers and we all agreed with her that everything was so beautiful…
It probably took us (well, maybe not us… but it took me!) 45 minutes before we realized we were on the Gardens of Alctraz tour! Haha! Oops!
We didn’t want to be rude and ditch the tour so we decided to hold out a little longer… We were almost to the prison where we knew the audio tour would begin.
Again, it was all so beautiful! It definitely was not what we were expecting Alcatraz to look like.
I had snuck away for a bit to use the restroom and got separated from our group. Don’t they look like they are enjoying the garden tour?!? Haha!
At this point we were about an 1:10 into the Gardens of Alcatraz tour. When our tour guide announced that we still had 1/3 of the tour left, we decided we could no longer be polite and we needed to move on.
Everyone was given audio headsets that walked you through the prison. It looks just like what you would expect from any movie you might have seen. The audio tour was very well done in my opinion and left us wanting to learn more about some of the inmates and attempted escapes it had mentioned.
Once we arrived back from Alcatraz island, we were led to area where you could purchase your group picture that they take of everyone prior to boarding.
Next we strolled down to Pier 39 where we had a reservation for lunch at Fog Harbor Fish House. The views in that place were AMAZING as well as the food.
We had read something that mentioned we should see the sea lions that hung out around Pier 39 so we leisurely walked around outside to see if we could see any. When we were in Cape Cod, we happened to see one that was just floating around by the pier and figured it would be the same thing here.
(FYI, if you are looking for comfy and cute shoes for an upcoming trip where there will be lots of walking, I highly recommend these! Mine are the black python.)
We were wrong… It wasn’t just one sea lion floating around… It was hundreds! Like this was an actual tourist’y thing to do! The sea lions had rafts to sunbathe on and there were tiered platforms for spectators to stand on for viewing. It was so neat!
Next on the agenda was a city tour! Look at how cool our VW bus was! Our tour guide, who was in his late 20’s, did a great job and played fun music as we cruised around the city.
We have zero fun when we are all together… 😉
After our tour ended, we decided we wanted dinner at an Italian restaurant we passed the day before while on our food tour.
Whew! That’s a wrap!
Stayed tuned for Part 3 of our trip which was our last full day in San Francisco!
